 Rug Care Guide

 Caring for your Moroccan Rug

Our variety of authentic Moroccan rugs are 100% un-dyed natural wool. Easy steps can be taken to care for your rug. Generally, you’ll want to avoid harsh chemical cleaners and vacuum machines and rotating brushes, as these can damage the wool. If the rug is in direct sunlight, it may lightly fade over time. Do not put rugs in the washer and dryer.

Regular care will ensure that your Gazelle Collection Moroccan rug lasts a lifetime!

Beni Ourain Rugs

These rugs are double knotted undyed natural wool, and have a heavy pile. Be aware of the rug’s delicate fibers when cleaning. Shedding is natural, as woven fibers loosen, but this will diminish over time. Try to rotate your rug every so often to ensure even wear and tear.

Maintenance

For everyday dirt and dust, we recommend airing out your rug regularly. You’ll simply bring it outside (or out the window) and shake off any accumulated dust. Let it air out for a few hours, allowing it breathe outside.

You may vacuum your rug once a month using the suction attachment. Pass the vacuum attachment along the top and bottom of the rug slowly and thoroughly.

Spot Cleaning

For general spots and stains, the sooner you catch them the better. Cover with baking soda for 20 seconds to absorb what is left of the stain, and lightly pass the vacuum’s suction, and repeat until stain has been fully absorbed. Make sure that the rug dries completely, organic wool may mold if not dried thoroughly.

For more difficult stains, use a mixture of baking soda and white distilled vinegar to break down the stain. Let it soak and stand for a few minutes, and gently pass a soft bristle brush to make sure that the mixture gets into the fibers. Let sit for 10 minutes and soak up remaining mixture with a dry paper towel.

Deep Cleaning

Regular maintenance will ensure your rug stays clean, but every few years your rug will require a full deep clean. For beni ourain rugs, we recommend leaving this to professionals.

Kilim Rugs

Our Kilim rugs are 100% handwoven wool. They are made by interweaving variously colored wefts and warps, creating a flatweave. This technique creates rugs without pile.

If you prefer to clean the rug yourself and have the outdoor space, be sure to wash your rug during the summer. Moroccan rugs need the warm sun to dry thoroughly. You can start by shaking out any dirt. Hang the carpet on a high wall or ladder, and run water through it, using a power washer or garden hose. Don’t worry, these rugs are undyed, therefore when cleaning, you do not have to worry about running colors. Make sure to run water downwards along the rug. Spot treat any stains using a clear colored natural detergent and a gentle scrub brush. Leave outside in the warm sun to dry. Depending on the weather this can take between 12-24 hours. Make sure that the rug dries completely, organic wool may mold if not dried thoroughly. Once inside, you can use a vacuum suction to perk up the pile.

Glaoui Rugs

Our Glaoui rugs are 100% handwoven wool, crafted by Berber women from Aït Ouaouzguites. These unique rugs are made using three techniques; hand-weaving, hand-knotting, and hand-embroidery.  These rugs are partially piled. Be aware of the rug’s delicate fibers when cleaning.
